Mayo Health Disparities Researcher Recognized for Community Outreach

By Sumedha G. Penheiter

The Jacksonville Mayor’s Hispanic American Advisory Board recently recognized Mayo Clinic physician and health disparities researcher Richard White, MD, for his outstanding contributions to the Jacksonville Hispanic Community. Dr. White, a member of OHDR’s Steering Committee, has been involved in health education and community outreach efforts, as well as extensive community engaged research with the Hispanic/Latino community. For example, Dr. White was an invited presenter at a State of Hispanic Health event, which addressed Latino community wellness across Northeast Florida. Dr. White also launched H.O.P.E. Para la ComunidadHealth Outreach Program en Español—aimed at increasing awareness of diseases and conditions disproportionately affecting the Hispanic community. Through H.O.P.E., Dr. White has conducted a health needs survey involving 8 Hispanic faith communities, and is in the process of developing a health intervention research study in collaboration with 19 Latino congregations. Dr. White has also coordinated a number of Spanish language health presentations, which will continue through 2018. OHDR Congratulates Dr. White on being recognized for his important work!
