Research Summary

Breast and prostate screening, health behavior change, community-based participatory research, Native American

Wesley O. Petersen, Ph.D., conducts research predominantly with American Indians and Alaska Natives. Dr. Petersen has served as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, and co-investigator on a variety of projects involving tribes in the Midwest, the Southwest and Alaska. His current work involves identifying theoretical mediators that may differentiate women who adhere to screening guidelines from those who do not. This work will establish the foundation on which to design interventional studies to increase women’s adherent participation in their tribes’ mammography screening programs. Dr. Petersen’s work follows principles of community-based participatory research.

Dr. Petersen chairs the Native American Interest Group, a monthly gathering designed to inform the local and national research community about research projects involving American Indians and Alaska Natives and opportunities for Mayo Clinic investigators to work with tribes.
